I have one record of my 3x paternal grandfather in the 1850 Census for Walton County, then he disappears. His wife remarried June 20, 1861 and certificate says her name was Mrs. Sarah McCormick, which means she was a widow, but I can find no records of what happened to John. He is listed in the census as John McComas but it is really McCormick. Details from the census: Male, white, age 30, birthplace Georgia, Home in 1950 Division 3, Walton, Florida, line number 28, dwelling number 90, spouse Sarah McComas. I’ve searched all the cemetery records in Walton with no hits and tried collateral research methods, but nothing lines up. I thought if I could find who owned the property they lived on in 1850, it might be a family member, but I’m told land documents were not yet recorded. Any recommendations?

I found the census record, and he is listed as a farmer. Unfortunately, he may have been buried where he fell, which was the custom of the time, so there will not be a public record.
I'm not sure where the 3rd Division of the county was at that time. I'll try to find out as time permits and see if more can be learned about his location. Depending on his location, his land may now be in Okaloosa, Holmes, or Washington County. Perhaps expanding your search will help.
Best wishes, Diane
