The story handed down by a great-granny is that "they" told her, her daughter and two grandsons, "you must leave here - you can go to the Everglades or to Oklahoma." We know, based on the age of the two grandsons at the time, that this happened sometime between late 1900 and 1910 - though it could have been as late as 1919 (which, we doubt). And, that they were taken to the Everglades where a Mr. Hinesley of Defuniak Spgs. went and brought them back to Walton County and the granny worked in his hotel/boarding house, The Florida House, until 1937. This granny also told her descendants that Mr. Hinesley had to pay money to get them back ... (those details not yet determined)
I have reviewed some of the laws regarding Indians which support the 'removal' issue was alive as late as 1920.
It is only I disagreeumption that the family was sent my train; doubtful it was aboard a boat (but could have been) Seems the train would have been used coming back, if not going...
Would love to communicate with interested parties regarding passenger trains in and out of DeFuniak 1900 - 1919. Genealogy is my only agenda - no judgements. I just want to know about this granny - Miss Tish Ann Habbard. She was a wonderful granny to her children. Thank you. Judy
