Samuel McQuagge is shown in the 1840 Walton County, FL Census as 1 male 20-30, 1 female 30-40, 1 female 80-90. I have not been able to locate him in the 1850 census in Walton or Holmes County. Samuel is shown in the 1847 Tax List as Samuel McQUEGGE, WM, 80ac, 1.10.
On September 7, 1858, after a trip to Eucheeanna, Florida to buy supplies and sell a parcel of land, Samuel was murdered at the home of Mrs. Nancy Sutley, where he had stopped for water about 10 miles from Eucheeanna, by his traveling companion and neighbor in southwestern Holmes County, John Ammons. Ammons was tried for the crime in Jackson County and again in Calhoun County, FL. Ammons, age 23, pleaded self defense, but admitted to Mrs. Sutley "immediately afterwards that he had killed him by striking him with a gun, which was broken in the process, and with his knife." The body bore knife wounds across the shoulders, neck and upper chest. His purse was never found with the money from the land sale. Ammons was hanged by the Holmes County sheriff in early 1862 as ordered by the Supreme Court of Florida in 1861. (account from "Holmesteading, a History of Holmes County, Florida" by E.W. Carswell)
Samuel was a son of Duncan McQuagge born ca 1765 and a brother of Daniel A. McQuagge of Marianna, FL and Norman McQuagge of Eucheeanna, FL in Walton County.
I have not been able to find out where Samuel was buried and what happened to his wife/family. Any additional information would be appreciated.
