From a website visitor: I am looking for information about my residence that I purchased in the summer of 2008 at 258 South 11th Street. I know that it is informally known as the "Phil Harris house" as a Mr Phil Harris and his wife Mary lived there for many years. I also believe the original owner was named WC Burke. If you know of any information regarding these folks, or the history of the house, I would be very appreciative. Diane HD#21

Did you find the information you needed? Mary Harris was a cousin of mine and I spent many hours in the Burke/Harris home growing up. Mary was the daughter of Ella McCaskill Burke. Ella was married to a Burke. I am related through the McCaskills. John Jette McCaskill was one of the founding fathers of Walton Co and is in the History of Walton Co by J. L McKinnon. He was my great grandfather (my mother was Julia McCaskill Garraway). He and wife Sarah had 8 children - 4 boys and 4 girls who lived. Ella was one of the girls. Ella was an artist.
Mary Harris was an entrepreneur and owned the gift shop in DeFuniak Springs. She later became an agent for an insurance company. She was a dynamo. Phil was her husband. A home of warmth and strong women! Maybe more history than you wanted.
